Surrey
Surrey is a county of contrasts providing easy access to London, a quick escape to the country and a short distance to the South Coast. Surrey owes its reputation in part to the variety of its scenery, with more urban areas situated in the north of the county. Pleasant surroundings combined with excellent transport links (including the M3, M23 and M25, rail access to London and proximity to Gatwick and Heathrow airports) lead to inevitable pressure for commercial and residential development. Besides the obvious attractions of London, Surrey itself is rich in artistic, cultural and leisure activities and it provides ample evidence of its historic heritage in sites and buildings of national importance.Â
Surrey Probation Area has main offices located in Guildford, Woking, Staines, and Redhill. In addition, some staff are working in prisons, which are located near Banstead, Bisley and Send.
Guildford
The County Town of Surrey, situated in the North Downs on the River Wey, 30 miles south west of London and easily accessible by both road and rail. The town is a bustling shopping, commercial, educational and cultural centre. The University of Surrey is located in the town, as well as places of historical and general interest, including a cathedral and the castle ruins.
Redhill
Along with its immediate neighbour Reigate, Redhill has until recently been mainly a residential centre but is now also a developing commercial centre. Both towns have well developed central shopping areas. The North Downs situated close by provide an attractive backcloth and the area is well served by its open spaces.
Staines
Staines lies on the River Thames within the Borough of Spelthorne and 20 miles from central London. There are excellent transport facilities to the City and West End and this has led to the growth of the district as a residential area for those who work in London. The town has a new Shopping Centre and there is a twice weekly market. Nearby places easily accessible are Hampton Court, Runnymede, Windsor, Thorpe Park and Richmond
Woking
Located only 25 miles from London and with excellent road and rail links, Woking ranks as one of Surrey's chief commercial and industrial centres. The town centre is a large modern development with many shops and leisure facilities.  Old Woking, a mile or two from the town, retains several interesting features from its 17th century market town past. The town's pleasant suburbs still enjoy a wealth of trees and open spaces.
